Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence

The Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President is seeking a current WSU faculty member for the position of Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence.

The Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence will provide leadership to Academic Affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Associate Vice Provost will identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches to faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning.

The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent skills in collaboration and team building and will coordinate with existing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of Compliance and Civil Rights, Institutional Research, all six physical campuses in the WSU system, and other units across the system.

Representative Duties

  • Leadership and Inclusive Excellence
    • Identify best-practice and evidence-based approaches to ensure sustained, long-term inclusive excellence in recruiting, supporting, and retaining faculty.
    • Develop a sustainable approach to training faculty, chairs and directors, deans, and tenure and promotion committees in principles and practices to increase inclusive excellence.
    • Collaborate with the Division of Student Affairs, WSU affinity groups, and those leading DEI efforts on the Everett, Spokane, Tri-Cities and Vancouver campuses to coordinate and align efforts across WSU.
    • Assist the Senior Vice Provost in Chairs and Directors trainings, the Provost’s Leadership Academy, and other faculty development efforts.
    • Consult with colleges in their efforts to share best practices and coordinate efforts across colleges as needed.
  • Research and Assessment
    • Lead development of a plan to assess effectiveness of faculty DEI efforts, with an aim to improve the efficacy and impact of strategic initiatives.  Coordinate with the Office of Institutional Research and Office of Civil Rights Compliance and Investigation to conduct ongoing analysis to identify trends, patterns, and short- and long-term impacts of DEI efforts in recruitment and retention of faculty.

Required Qualifications

  • Rank of associate professor or full professor.
  • Experience leading meaningful organizational change, particularly as it relates to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to conceptualize and execute programs and initiatives, with demonstrated abilities to set priorities. Possess sound analytical skills and ability to think strategically.

  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with faculty and staff
  • Work as a strategic visionary, connecting best practice and evidence-based programs and initiatives to WSU’s mission and goals
  • Conceptualize and prioritize objectives
  • Exercise independent judgment to integrate resources, policies, and information to develop equitable policies and procedures.

Appointment Status

  • Faculty, 12-month, 0.50 FTE position
