Former Coug addresses financial wellness

Jed Collins, financial wellness
Former Cougar football player Jed Collins addressed a large group of students last month, speaking about financial wellness and financial planning.

Jed Collins addressed a classroom full of eager WSU students last month in Pullman, but he wasn’t discussing his NFL career, or even his glory days with the Cougar football team.

Collins is spreading a message of financial wellness these days, having retired from football and transitioned to life as a financial planner for Brighton Jones. His story resonates with college students, many of whom don’t receive practical advice on finances as part of their formal education.

“He has a great approach, and a story that resonates with our students and is applicable across a variety of experiences,” says Michael Highfill, Director of Student Initiatives, who helped arrange the address. “We’re really grateful to Jed and impressed with the standing-room-only student response to this event. It’s something we need to continue developing and working to provide.”

Collins played linebacker, fullback and tight end at WSU from 2004 to 2007 before playing in the NFL, earning the majority of his playing time with the New Orleans Saints. The financial wellness event was the latest effort for WSU students. A Financial Wellness Fair is scheduled for April 9, and financial wellness resources are being developed for students.

“Students have indicated that financial education is a need,” Highfill adds. “We know that finances play a significant role in their ability to be involved and academically engaged while they are here and successful after they graduate.”
