Convocation set for Aug. 21

Thank you for your continued support for and participation in University Convocation. With over 3,000 participants last year, Convocation is quickly becoming a powerful tradition here at Washington State University and we are continuing to build a sense of community among the entering class.

This fall we will once again hold University Convocation, on August 21 at 10 a.m. at Beasley Coliseum. It is our goal to bring together the entire university community in one formal event to mark the beginning of a new academic year and make a powerful first impression on our new students, faculty, and staff.

University Convocation welcomes newcomers to WSU’s academic community. For new undergraduate students, this is an opportunity to hear strong academic messages while marking the beginning of their WSU experience, which will culminate at commencement. New faculty will be exposed to the history and traditions of our University and experience firsthand WSU’s commitment to the education of its students. For new staff members, University Convocation helps them see their place as educators and mentors within the learning community at WSU. At the conclusion of the ceremony, at approximately 11:15 a.m., faculty, students, and staff will exit to the All-Campus Picnic, which will be held outside the Coliseum. Food is free to all faculty, staff, and students.

Once again, your participation and leadership is critical to the success of this important university-wide event. I’m requesting at least one faculty member from each department represent their college in the faculty processional which will assemble at 9:30 a.m. in Beasley Coliseum. The deans from each college, wearing regalia, will be seated on the president’s platform at the front of the stage along with their respective college banner. All other faculty in the processional will be seated in the front of the audience. For faculty members that are seated in the audience, regalia is encouraged but not required.

For faculty that would like to rent regalia at no charge, please fill out the request form on the University Convocation website: www.wsu.edu/convocation. The deadline to request regalia through the Bookie is July 20. For questions regarding regalia please contact the Bookie at 332-2537 ext. 110. If you have other questions or comments about the event please contact John Nugent at 335-4242 or jnugent@wsu.edu.

I look forward to seeing you at University Convocation in August.

Sincerely,

Dan Bernardo, Interim President
