Memo on classroom safety

Dear WSU Leadership and Faculty,

At Washington State University, the safety of our students, faculty and staff is paramount. We strongly encourage you to do all you can to prepare for emergencies, and believe the resources provided will help us keep our campus safe in the case of an emergency.

The syllabus statement below has been approved by the President and Co-Provosts and should be included in syllabi University-wide. Individual campuses may want to include additional instruction based on their needs.

The Emergency Guide can be printed out, and should be available in each classroom for quick reference. On the first day of class for the semester, please make a special effort to review this information and your classroom-specific emergency plan.

Please refer to the resources at faculty.wsu.edu/classroom-safety for more emergency preparedness information. More resources will be added to the site in the coming weeks.

If you have questions regarding emergency preparedness and/or classroom safety, please contact the Police Department or Office of Campus Safety at your location.

Syllabus Statement

Classroom and campus safety are of paramount importance at Washington State University, and are the shared responsibility of the entire campus population. WSU urges students to follow the “Alert, Assess, Act” protocol for all types of emergencies and the “Run, Hide, Fight” response for an active shooter incident. Remain ALERT (through direct observation or emergency notification), ASSESS your specific situation, and ACT in the most appropriate way to assure your own safety (and the safety of others if you are able).

Please sign up for emergency alerts on your account at MyWSU. For more information on this subject, campus safety, and related topics, please view the FBI’s Run, Hide, Fight video and visit the WSU safety portal.

Sincerely,

Erica Weintraub Austin & Ron Mittelhammer
