Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Education

Dr. Lisa Gloss will step down as the Dean of the Graduate School and return to her associate professor faculty position in the School of Molecular Biosciences, effective July 1, 2022. Dr. Gloss has served as the Dean for more than three years, and her leadership is greatly appreciated.  Formerly titled the Dean of the Graduate School, the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President seeks a current associate or full professor (career or tenure track) to serve as the Vice Provost for Graduate and Professional Education. This is a 1.00 FTE position.

The incoming Vice Provost will be charged with creating a vision for dynamic growth and excellence in WSU’s graduate and professional education programs. As part of that charge, the Vice Provost will conduct a careful assessment of current support for graduate and professional education and develop a plan—in collaboration with academic leadership system-wide—as to how to best serve our students and the research mission in years to come. This assessment will include engagement with faculty and graduate student stakeholders, research into national best practices in the administration of graduate and professional education, and recommendations for changes to our administrative and supportive services.

The incoming Vice Provost will also be asked to develop academic policies analogous to those that govern undergraduate education, provide training and support to advisors, and create extensive academic and career development education opportunities for graduate and professional students.

Representative Responsibilities

  • Develop and carry out the mission of graduate and professional education throughout the system;
  • Advance the University’s land-grant mission;
  • Provide leadership that cultivates an environment that promotes the academic success, professional development, and personal development of all graduate and professional students;
  • Ensure effectiveness and achievement of goals in areas of student growth, retention, and graduation rates;
  • Oversee graduate student employment policies (such as benefits negotiation, guidelines for compensation, etc.) to ensure equity across campuses and colleges;
  • Design, establish, and maintain an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the goals and objectives associated with graduate and professional education; and
  • Develop and manage the area’s budget.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates must have an earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree and the qualifications for appointment as associate or full professor (career or tenure track).
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant higher education administrative experience is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence as an academic and administrative leader.
  • Demonstrated experience with graduate student supervision.
  • Experience with planning and budgeting, resource allocation and development, and assessment.
  • Experience in and a commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusive excellence, and working with diverse constituencies.
  • Demonstrated successful problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills.

Appointment Status and Duration

  • Faculty, 12-month, 1.00 FTE position
  • July 1, 2022 (2-year initial appointment, subject to renewal upon satisfactory performance)
