“The Teaching Academy strives to elevate excellence in teaching and learning throughout WSU, and in line with that, we established these awards this year to acknowledge those who have recently published and to also support the professional development of faculty,” said Joy Egbert, academy chair.

May 1 is the deadline for applications for the Teaching Conference Registration Award, while the deadline is May 15 for the Outstanding Publication in the Scholarship of Teaching in Higher Education Award. Details on these as well as university-level grants and awards are online.

Teaching Conference Registration Award

This award of up to $500 covers the cost of registration fees to attend a conference, meeting, or workshop that will directly enhance the applicant’s classroom teaching and/or scholarship of teaching. The recipient must attend the event during the July 1, 2020-July 1, 2021 period.

Faculty completing the online application must be current full-time WSU faculty at the rank of lecturer or above, and agree to present on what they learned from their attendance at the event. The academy’s review committee will make awards based on the strength of the application, available funds, and number of applicants.

Outstanding Publication Award

This $500 award recognizes WSU faculty for an outstanding publication that is either an article of a chapter. Though not open to academy members, faculty from any discipline at any rank—career-track or tenured/tenure-track—are eligible if they published a peer-reviewed article within the scope of teaching and learning in higher education during 2019 or 2020. The focus of the publication can be conceptual, theoretical, practical, or empirical, and the work may be single- or co-authored.

The award application includes a cover letter with a reflection on the manuscript, a pdf copy of the manuscript, and a nomination statement from a colleague familiar with the publication. Academy evaluators will consider the impact and quality of the publication outlet, the innovation and/or originality of the work, the potential impact beyond the author’s discipline, and student populations and inclusivity covered by the topic.

The organization serves as the institution’s premier organization dedicated to teaching excellence. It is open to a select number of faculty with academic responsibility to the university who have records of sustained excellence in teaching and are recognized for their scholarship in teaching and learning. The newest members were installed in May 2020, bringing the membership total to 60.
