The first 50 registrants signing up to participate in this fall’s WSU Teaching Academy One-Read Book Club will receive a free, printed copy of Becoming a Student-Ready College: A New Culture of Leadership for Student Success.
“The asynchronous, online club will kick off on Sept. 1, so we encourage interested faculty, staff, and graduate students to register as soon as possible,” said academy chair Ashley Boyd.
“While printed copies will be available to those first registrants, e-books are available at any time to all other participants through WSU Libraries. Everyone participating in the club will have a copy.”
Boyd said the book was selected to serve a unified, virtual community ready to explore and discuss students’ college readiness and examine how to create institutional value and facilitate student success. Rather than looking at how well students are prepared for college, the book explores what universities are doing to prepare for their entering students, and what policies, practices, and cultures need to be adjusted to be student-ready.
The club is intended to help participants develop skills in a challenging world of distributed team and time pressures.
Those in the club will be well prepared when the book’s lead author, Tia Brown McNair, delivers the virtual, keynote address for the academy-hosted TEACHxWSU 2024 set for Oct. 25, said Boyd. The author’s presentation will be followed throughout the day by a number of workshops at several campuses. Registration for TEACHxWSU will open soon on the academy’s website.
The Teaching Academy has partnered with external experts, PBC Guru, to host the virtual book club that will run from September into December. Those who join will meet and network with fellow members to exchange perspectives while examining topics in the book. Questions about the book club, the book, and TEACHxWSU can be sent to Boyd.
