Free copies of the book, Grading for Equity: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How It Can Transform Schools and Classrooms by Joe Feldman, will be available to registrants for the next WSU Teaching Academy One-Read Book Club set to launch Feb. 17.

“Faculty, staff, and graduate students from every campus are invited to sign up,” said Ashley Boyd, academy chair. In addition to the asynchronous, online offering, academy members Blythe Duell and Philip Morgan will also offer two synchronous discussion meetings.
The first 50 to sign up will each receive a printed copy of the book, and all other participants can access e-books through WSU Libraries.
The club is designed to help participants develop teaching skills in a “challenging world of distributed team and time pressures,” Boyd said.
Grading for Equity, in its second edition, explores grading practices and how they can impact achievement and opportunity differences among students. The author, Feldman, has worked in the education field for more than 20 years as a teacher, principal, and district administrator. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Crescendo Education Group, which supports improved grading and assessment practices.
For the second time, the academy is partnering with external experts, PBC Guru, to host the virtual book club and registration is done through PBC Guru. Those who join will meet and network with fellow members from WSU to exchange perspectives and examine topics in the book. Faculty are encouraged to adapt ideas generated by the club experience for their classes to benefit all students.
Boyd said support for the book club project comes from a 2024 Transformational Change Initiative (TCI) grant to the academy. Questions may be sent to Boyd.
