Position Vacancy and Announcement: Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Development

The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce a search for a current WSU full professor (career-track or tenured) to serve in a full-time faculty position as the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Development. This position will report to the Provost and Executive Vice President and is a member of the Provost’s leadership team.

The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Development plays a critical leadership role in ensuring that the University recruits, develops, and retains the world-class faculty needed to achieve its strategic goals. They advise the Provost on all matters related to faculty. The Vice Provost serves as the system-wide advocate for the faculty and provides leadership for the assessment and development of that faculty. The Vice Provost works collaboratively with the deans, department chairs, school directors, and vice chancellors for academic affairs (VCAAs) on all matters related to the faculty. The Vice Provost also works collaboratively with those engaged in faculty governance, particularly the Faculty Senate.

Representative examples of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Development’s responsibilities include:

  1. Manage the annual processes and advise the Provost on promotion and tenure, annual reviews, intensive third-year reviews, and professional leave.
  2. Direct activities that foster the professional development of the faculty system-wide, such as WSU’s ADVANCE Program and the Provost’s Leadership Academy.
  3. Serve as the supervisor for the Office of the University Ombuds and advise the Ombuds as appropriate. 
  4. Create and manage training programs for Chairs and Directors to support faculty mentoring and the university system’s priorities and strategic goals.
  5. Create and manage system-level faculty development opportunities such as the New Faculty Orientation (NFO), the Provost’s Leadership Academy (PLA), and recurring standing meetings with Chairs and Directors.
  6. Prepare annual reports for the Office of the Provost on various issues such as salary comparisons, mentoring, and other special reports as deemed beneficial to faculty retention and success.
  7. Lead investigative committees for the disciplinary process in accordance with the Faculty Manual.   

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must hold an earned doctorate and possess the qualifications for appointment as a professor (career-track or tenured). A minimum of three (3) years of relevant higher education administrative experience is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence as an academic and administrative leader.
  • Administrative experience involving faculty development and evaluation (e.g., chair, dean, director) and shared governance.
  • Strong knowledge of WSU faculty and administrative policies and procedures. 
  • Demonstrated successful problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills.

Appointment Status and Duration

  • Faculty, 12-month, 1.00 FTE position
  • Appointment term: June 1, 2026 – May 15, 2029 (*term may be adjusted to accommodate candidate’s current obligations)
