WSU TRIO Programs

WSU is home to 18 TRIO programs that strive to support students’ success, and 6 of those are managed by the Office of Academic Engagement (OAE). In fall 2020, OAE received a $4 million, five-year grant that funds 3 TRIO programs–the ongoing ATLAS program (recently renamed Teacher Prep), plus two new ones for STEM and veteran students.

The 18 TRIO programs at WSU serve nearly 4,000 individuals, with about $5 million in grant funding annually from the U.S. Dept. of Education. The programs are managed by several university units across the state. They serve pre-college as well as students currently enrolled.

Washington high-school students participate in Upward Bound programming that helps prepare them for college-level academics. Current WSU students engage in a number of programs, including the McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program which provides guidance from undergraduate into graduate programs at the university; it was the first WSU TRIO program in 1999.

TRIO: Federal programming

Nationally, TRIO refers to a set of federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and assist individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including low-income, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities. The goal is to help them progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to graduate school.
