Session recording:

11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.: “Unraveling Faculty Burnout: Pathways to Reckoning and Renewal” Workshop Cancelled

Unfortunately, Dr. Rebecca Pope-Ruark, the director of the Office of Faculty Professional Development at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA, has had to cancel the workshop we had planned.

We still want to take the opportunity to highlight two of the books she has written on faculty burnout: Unraveling Faculty Burnout: Pathways to Reckoning and Renewal (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2022) and Agile Faculty: Practical Strategies for Managing Research, Service, and Teaching (University of Chicago Press, 2017). Dr. Pope-Ruark is also the host of the agile academic, a podcast for women in higher education. Brief information regarding her book You Aren’t Alone: Burnout Resilience in Challenging Times is provided below.

You Aren’t Alone: Burnout Resilience in Challenging Times
The last three years have been challenging, to say the very least, and the ongoing trauma of the pandemic and shake-ups on our campuses have impacted both faculty and students. Many faculty were on the edge of burnout before 2020, and the swings between in-person to remote and back again have tested the coping skills of the strongest faculty members. In this workshop, we will explore what burnout is and how to recognize it, examine two lenses through which to look at burnout resilience – purpose and connection, and brainstorm action steps for dealing with burnout.

12:30 – 1:30 p.m.: Post-workshop Discussion and Working Groups

Event participants will discuss the workshop in working groups.

1:30 – 3:00 p.m.: Understanding an Instructor’s Role in Supporting Student Health and Wellbeing

In partnership with Jenna Hyatt (WSU Dean of Students), Joel Schwartzkopf (Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Health and Wellbeing, WSU Pullman), and Jennifer Ellsworth (Director, Counseling and Psychological Services), the student resource session will focus on helping faculty understand their role as instructors in supporting student health and wellbeing.
