Administrator Review Process

Bi-Annual Performance Review

Annual reviews for vice provosts and deans (presently located on the WSU Pullman campus) are conducted on a bi-annual basis.  For those undergoing the performance review process, each individual is asked to submit a self-assessment documenting the following for their respective college or unit:

  • College/Unit Accomplishments (from the previous academic year)
  • College-level/Unit-level Goals (for the upcoming academic year)
  • Personal Accomplishments and Goals (from the previous academic year and for the upcoming academic year)

The Provost’s Office is resolute in leadership’s use of key performance metrics at each level of our institution (department, college, etc.).  This is consistent with the WSU System’s commitment to data-informed decision making, as articulated in the System Strategic Plan. As such, the Provost’s Office distributes updated summary reports of key metrics for colleges over the past five years to deans who are completing their performance review process. The summary includes data such as undergraduate FTE, majors, graduate student numbers, extramural funding, faculty FTE, and expenditures.

In addition to the self-assessment referenced above, a 360-degree evaluation is performed and incorporated into the performance review.  The 360-degree survey is released to all faculty and staff within the respective college/unit and university administration (vice provosts, chancellors, deans, and VCAAs).  For the vice provost’s 360-degree evaluations, associate deans, chairs, and directors are also included in the distribution.

Of importance, deans (presently located on the WSU Pullman campus) are required to conduct annual 360-degree surveys for associate deans, chairs, and directors. Survey creation and dissemination is the responsibility of the respective college. The 360-degree evaluation is incorporated into the performance review.

Five-Year Administrative Review

Vice provosts and deans (presently located on the WSU Pullman campus) are reviewed during every fifth year of service.  Five-year administrative reviews have the following objectives:

  • To develop a meaningful basis for the decision to continue the appointment of the dean or vice provost;
  • To enhance administrative performance of the dean or central administrator;
  • To increase professional development for the dean or central administrator; and,
  • To improve accountability of the dean or central administrator to appropriate constituencies.

For those undergoing the five-year administrative review process, each individual is asked to submit a self-assessment documenting the following for their respective college or unit:

  • The area’s mission and broad goals, including its relation to the university as a whole and with comment on any recent or planned changes;
  • The area’s programs, especially significant changes made during the review period;
  • The area’s organizational and governance structure;
  • The role of the administrator as seen by them;
  • Accomplishments and the administrator’s role in them; and
  • The outlook for the future, including aspirations for the area and obstacles confronting it.

In addition to the self-assessment referenced above, a comprehensive 360-degree evaluation is performed and incorporated into the five-year administrative review.  The 360-degree survey is released to all faculty, staff, students (graduate, professional, and undergraduate as appropriate) within the respective college/unit and university administration (vice provosts, chancellors, deans, and VCAAs). If the college or unit has engaged external stakeholders, they are also included in the distribution.
